ABOUT THE HAWKER FURY MK I & II
The Hawker Fury was the RAF’s first ever operational fighter to exceed 200mph in leveled flight. It was also the RAF’s most esthetically pleasing biplane fighter of all time, its elegance being equaled by its superb aerobatic qualities and highly sensitive controls. The first production Fury I made its maiden flight on March 25th 1931; in May of that year, the 43rd squadron was the first to receive this model. Part of the Fury’s rationale was its fast interception of bombers and the designs initial climb rate of almost 2 400’ per minute made that possible. By May 1932, the 1st and 25th squadrons had also been equipped with the Fury I, while the new improved Fury II yielded a 20% increase in power, a greater rate of climb and a higher top speed. Five RAF squadrons received the Fury II between 1936 and 1937; several foreign air forces also ordered the plane, three of the fighters even serving in the Spanish Civil War. These Spanish Furies were fitted with cantilever undercarriages and reached model record speed of 242mph. However, by 1939 all RAF Fury squadrons had been re-equipped with Glostor Gladiators, Hawker Hurricanes, and other designs.
