Facts about the MG-17 Gun Barrels (caliber 7,92) The “Rheinmetall Mg-17 calibre 7,92 mm was originally introduced in the biplane fighter Arado Ar-65 in the mid-30s, and later saw service in the Ar-68, He-51, He-111 and the legendary Fw-190s and Bf-109s during WWII.
The weapon is adopted for fixed mounting only. It is supply by a disintegrable metallic belt. The MG-17 used a mechanism named “Locking Sleeve” which has an interrupted threaded ring switch, it open and close the breech used by the linear alternative movement. To increase the rate of fire, the muzzle had a gas trap which effectively turn back a portion of the bullet propellant and accelerate the lock movement.
This gun barrel had a cyclic rate of fire of 1160 rpm, droping at nearly 1000 rpm in synchronized mountings like the one used in the German single engine fighters. The MG is a pneumatic triggered, it weights 12 Kg (27 LB) which has an overall length of 1150 mm (600 mm barrel). Despite being designed for fighters some were used in fixed mounting in bombers and attack planes such as the He-111, Ju-88 and Me-110. These gun barrels were used as a defensive device when in fact they were more like a psychological weapon.
